Hello,

Welcome to summer! Since in New England, we wait all year for this glorious weather, be sure to take many moments to slow down and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Dine alfresco. Lay on the beach. Plant some herbs in your yard. Or maybe you want to consider taking the first step to getting organized so you gain some savory peace of mind while enjoying all the summer has to offer. If you’ve been thinking about it, but are not fully certain of the benefits, have a quick look at some of the paybacks my clients have told me they have experienced once they got organized, and read a few quick tips to gain some simple and instant organization.

Harmony Key

A Few Really Good Reasons to Get Organized

1. Being organized saves money. If you’ve ever bought a new pair of scissors and then found the pair you lost in all the clutter or had to fork over a late fee because didn’t know an overdue bill was living under a pile on your desk, then you know the advantages that getting things in order will bring to your life. Try putting things back into their homes after using them and storing like items together for easy retrieval.

2. Being organized makes you more productive. Does getting organized feel like an endless task that keeps popping up on your to do list and that keeps you from doing the work that really would be useful to you? Once you can stop searching for lost papers, wasting energy feeling guilty because you are disorganized, and being distracted by the endless tasks visible on your desk, you’ll be free to get those most important tasks done. You can try this by only having the one task you are working on at the moment on top of your desk. Get organized the right way, and for good, and get to the real work or play.

3. Less stuff equals less stress. Clearing the piles of stuff from your home or office is a valuable method for decreasing stress. Here comes the toughest suggestion for most of my clients: let go of anything you have not used in a year. Once the excess stuff is gone, you no longer have to take care of it or figure out where to store it. You will immediately gain mental space in your head. Really you will. All my clients have heard my mantra of “everything you own, owns you.”

4. Organizing gives you the gift of time. This is one of the most powerful motivations for getting organized. When you no longer have to manage the clutter in your life, you can devote that energy and time to the people and activities you love. If you do organize one aspect of your life or one drawer in your home, keep it that way by daily and weekly maintenance. It is easier to stay organized than to get organized. So continue to reap the time benefits of all that work you dedicated to it in the first place.

Getting, and staying organized, doesn’t happen overnight, but it will give back to you more than you put into it.

Sticking to One Task

To continue on the multi-tasking (one of my favorite topics) theme from the last newsletter, read this short piece on a fascinating Stanford University study. And you just might uncover something you didn’t know about the horrible effects this habit has on us.

Your successes, challenges, questions, and insights? Love to hear them!!!

Thanks for the opportunity to share some Living Harmony with you.
